Cacao FAQ

Ceremonial cacao is minimally processed cacao traditionally used as a nourishing cacao drink and in intentional rituals. Unlike conventional chocolate, it is kept in a much more natural form, allowing the cacao’s distinctive flavour, richness and natural compounds to remain.

Ceremonial cacao is generally made from whole cacao beans that are fermented, dried and processed into a paste, buttons or similar form, retaining the cacao’s natural cocoa butter. Cacao powder has had much of the cocoa butter removed and is therefore lighter and more powder-like. They can be used differently depending on how you want to prepare your cacao.

Simply combine your desired amount of cacao with warm plant milk or water and whisk or blend until smooth. You can personalise your cacao with ingredients such as cinnamon, ginger, vanilla, chilli or your preferred natural sweetener. Avoid boiling the cacao — gentle heating is preferable.

There is no single correct serving size. For a lighter everyday drink, you might start with 10–15g. For a richer cacao experience, 20–30g is commonly used. Start with a smaller amount and adjust according to your personal preference.

Our cacao is sourced from different cacao-growing regions around the world, with individual products clearly labelled by their origin. We celebrate the unique flavour, character and qualities that each origin brings.

Our pure ceremonial cacao products are naturally plant-based. However, when purchasing blends or other products, please check the individual ingredient list for the most accurate information.

Keep cacao cool, dry and away from direct sunlight, ideally in an airtight container or in its original sealed packaging. Cacao can be sensitive to heat and moisture, so avoid storing it somewhere warm. There is generally no need to refrigerate it.

Cacao is a natural agricultural product, so colour, texture, aroma and flavour can vary between origins, harvests and batches. These natural differences are part of what makes single-origin cacao special.
